Type: Digital Learning Course Audience: NHS mental health care staff of all levels Word count: 20,900 Organisation Overview Maudsley Learning [login to view URL] is a department, within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust [login to view URL], that creates and delivers training and digital learning related to mental healthcare. We are developing a digital learning course for all staff which covers our ethos and working practices in reducing serious incidents during patient care. The aim is to ensure staff intervene effectively before serious incidents occur, an approach known as Primary Prevention. This is done through the lens of a real-life patient’s story to emphasise the importance of identifying unconscious bias, historical, cultural and procedural factors that influence staff, patients and patient care. The course is in its final stages of development, and we require copy editing services. The content is based on a story of a patient incident. Learning from the incident has prompted new induction training for staff in order to improve work practice and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviours in the workplace. The content is emotive and, at times, can be upsetting due to the nature of the issues discussed. An example of tone of voice is shown in some introductory text below: ‘This is [patient name]. This course is based on his story. The story of a young man, who in 2010 needed the support of Trust services. Through [Patient Name]’s Story we will learn about offering better mental healthcare for all. A whole system approach to improving quality of life, safety and experiences of mental healthcare for all.’ Learning outcomes, 3 hrs of learning: Identify ways of contributing to primary prevention in your role Understand how the historical and cultural context of the Trust influences our relationship with local communities.
